Vision and Fulfillment
When we first met the clients, the home was nearly hidden from view. Overgrown vegetation blocked sight lines, trapped moisture against the siding, and contributed to structural concerns. The existing masonry was failing, making the front entry unsafe—more like an uphill scramble than a welcoming approach. The homeowners wanted a safe, elegant, and stable entrance that would embrace the dramatic grade change as a feature rather than a liability, transforming the site into a true estate setting.
Our design highlights classic New England stonework, using walls and stairs to frame a grand approach while avoiding the monotony of a straight climb. Layered plantings soften the masonry and provide seasonal color, ensuring the landscape feels gracious and inviting rather than imposing.
Challenges and Solutions
The most significant challenge was the 10-foot grade change between the road and the front entry.
In design
We broke the climb into shorter, comfortable stair runs with intermediate landings and angled turns to avoid the feel of a stadium ascent. This required precise grading and elevation layout to ensure a seamless connection to the existing entry door.
During construction
The steep slope made access nearly impossible. Our team sequenced the build carefully—constructing lower walls first to create staging areas for the upper walls. Custom detailing was required at the prominent 45-degree turns, as thin stone veneer typically accommodates only 90-degree transitions. Through careful craftsmanship, the team executed seamless joints that elevated the masonry from functional to exceptional.
Wow Factor
The sweeping front stairway and stone walls create a grand, estate-like approach, especially when illuminated at night by integrated landscape lighting. The balance of bold masonry with lush, layered plantings delivers a dramatic first impression while retaining warmth and elegance. The transformation from an overgrown, unsafe entry to a sophisticated and inviting arrival sequence consistently elicits a “wow” from visitors.
Special/Additional Features
Sustainability and Resilience
The planting palette emphasizes native and pollinator-friendly species while incorporating classic Cape Cod favorites such as Hydrangea macrophylla to meet the clients’ aesthetic goals.
Water Management
A critical element due to the site’s slope and the absence of roof gutters. A French drain along the foundation, combined with subsurface drainage behind the retaining walls, ensures stormwater is safely directed away from the home and structural elements. This system protects the new walls, prevents bed washouts, and enhances long-term durability.
Energy Efficiency
The integration of energy-efficient LED landscape lighting highlights masonry details, guides visitors safely, and reduces energy consumption compared to conventional lighting.
