How to Properly Water Your Lawn for Lush, Healthy Grass

Summer is finally here! We are often asked some basic questions about how to properly water your lawn. Here are some FAQ’s and answers…

How much water does my lawn need?

This varies based on weather, the amount of sun or shade your yard receives, and how hearty the grass is going into the season. Read on for some helpful tips on getting it right in your yard.

When is the best time to water your lawn?

Early morning (4am-10am) is the best time to water the lawn because the air is cooler and there’s usually not much wind to blow the droplets. In the middle of the day, water evaporates too quickly. And in the evenings, water can cling to the blades overnight, which can cause lawn diseases.

How much water does a lawn need?

Water long enough to moisten the soil about 6 inches down, which is the depth of a healthy grass root system. To see how far the moisture seeps down, check the soil every 15 minutes during the first watering. The best way to test is to take a shovel and lift up the sod, carefully so you can place it back down once you’re done observing. If you have an irrigation system, be careful not to hit any pipes!

Time how long it takes the water to work its way that far into the ground, then water for that duration every time.

How often to water?

Generally we recommend watering 1-2 times per week. Most people water for 15 minutes per day – this is not always ideal as it may not allow for the whole root system to get water. You want a deep and healthy root system. Too much watering can lead to fungus and a shallow root system; fewer waterings will actually encourage the roots to grow deeper.

How to conserve water?

A new irrigation system will actually use less water! If you have an old system, consider an upgrade. The newest irrigation technology will reduce water usage and keep your lawn looking its best meaning you’ll save money on your water bills as well as spend less money on fertilization and weed control.

Adjust sprinkler heads to make sure you aren’t watering walkways, driveways, or the road. This may seem simple enough, but it’s often overlooked!
