Career Path: Account Management

Bob Deasy of Outerland

Bob Deasy

Q: Describe the path that brought you to the landscaping industry?
A: I started from high school, just liked working outside. I worked on a golf course and thought it was pretty neat. Going to college, I found out you could go to college for grass, so that’s what I went to school for. Then I wanted to change career paths and grass is grass whether it’s residential or golf course

Q: What brought you to Outerland?
A: The commitment to keeping staff happy is huge. I think it’s greatly appreciated and you can see it already, so early in the season. It’s huge for me that the guys feel appreciated and they want to be here… And that we’re able to please our customers, instead of saying no, there’s no time for that. Our guys can tell the clients ‘yes’.

Q: What do you tell your friends you do for work?
A: I work for a landscape company. Essentially I tell them that I run quality control. I make sure jobs are done correctly and guys are happy.

Q: What is your favorite part of the job?
A: The staff. I love interacting with the guys that work here.

Q: What do you find most challenging about your job?
A: The staff. And the customers. Getting people to come to work and be happy is quite a challenge. And customers, pleasing customers- You’re not going to be able to please everybody, and trying to is difficult.

Q: What’s one thing people might not know or expect about your job?
A: It is more people-based. You need to take care of your staff and know-how to be a counselor or a therapist for staff and clients.

Q: What skills or characteristics do you think your job requires?
A:Need to be a people person, need to have a work ethic, and need good time management.

Q: What makes Outerland unique?

A: The employee-based ethos of the company is huge. Not a lot of companies where the CEO knows everyone on the staff. I think that goes a long way with the guys that Jamie knows their names.

Q: What do you like about working in the landscaping industry?

A: Being outside. I’m outside all the time. I get to see different properties like high-end estates I never really knew existed until I got into this business. So that’s one of the best parts is seeing homes that are beautiful pieces of property.

Q: What advice would you give someone who’s looking to get into our industry?

A: Jump into it. If you like it, you like it. If you think you want to be outside and you’re a good people person – It’s a good fit for you. You don’t need to know much about landscaping, you can learn that. You can’t learn a good work ethic and people skills.

Q: What makes you proud to work at Outerland?
A: Watching the guys look back or come back and tell me how good a property looks and the pride they take into every job that they do.
